In her column for DH Les Sports+, Dominique Monami looks back on a day organized with Sport Vlaanderen, Adeps, Ostbelgien, the Belgian Paralympic Committee and the BOIC to help some fifty athletes, including Ysaline Bonaventure and Joachim Gérard, prepare for life after their careers. She describes the identity crisis every athlete goes through when hanging up their racket, and the importance of highlighting the transferable skills acquired during a sports career: stress management, resilience, discipline, the ability to work under pressure.
She also shares her own experience: after her career, she explored several paths (teaching tennis, managing a golf club) before finding her calling in coaching. For her, preparing for life after sport doesn’t mean turning your back on it, but rather anticipating, testing different options and leaning on your network to turn this transition into a new adventure.
